Europe Budget Travel Tips

Europe Budget Travel Tips

Full of history, great culture and beautiful architecture and natural landscapes, Europe is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, but it is also one of the most expensive. Finding a cheap flight is a good way to start saving money on your European trip, however once you are there, accommodation, food and transport costs can quickly chew through your budget.

Although Europe can be expensive, there are many ways to save money and travel this great continent even if you are a budget traveller. Here are some tips on how to travel Europe on a budget.

Accommodation

Hostels:
One of the best ways to save money in Europe is to stay in hostels. You may think that hostels are only for 20 something backpackers looking to party, but in truth there are hostel options for all types of travellers. The cheapest hostel rooms are known as dorms, where you get your own bed in a shared room that usually house from 4-10 people, as well as a shared bathroom. Most hostels also offer private rooms, some just as nice as a hotel room but at a much cheaper price.

Camping:
Even cheaper than hostels, camping can be a great option. In Europe there is an excellent amount of convenient camp grounds, often even within major cities. And these camp grounds have excellent facilities such as bathrooms, cooking areas and shuttle buses to take you to the nearest town or city.

Last minute deals, multiple night stays and advanced bookings:
If you want to stay in hotels, there are still plenty of ways to save money. Often hotels will offer last minute deals if they have plenty of rooms available, and give a great discount. Many hotels also offer discounts for booking more than a certain amount of nights, while others offer discounts if you book well in advance. It’s a good idea to look around on hotel sites and see what is available.

Apartments:
If you’re staying in a certain city for a few weeks or more, renting an apartment can be a very affordable option. The longer you stay, the more options there are to save money. For example some apartments can be rented on a weekly basis, while others are monthly. This is also a great option if you are travelling with a few people to share the cost.

Food

Cook your own:
If you are staying in a hostel, camping or renting an apartment, it is likely that you will have kitchen facilities available. Buying your food at a supermarket and cooking it your self will save you a lot of money. This doesn’t mean that you have to eat every meal like this, but even one meal a day will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Eat local:
Eating where the locals eat can be a lot cheaper than eating where the tourists eat, and usually the food will be a lot better too. Often restaurants that are located close to tourist attractions will leave you with a hefty bill, while you may be able to walk a couple of blocks away and find a nice restaurant for half the price! Usually the locals know best.

Street food/take away:
It’s not unusual to find different food carts or eateries located around a city, and they are a great option for saving money on food. For example: For only a couple of dollars you could buy a nice slice of Pizza in Rome, a Crepe in Paris, or a Bratwurst in Berlin.

Transport

Rail pass:
One of the best ways to travel in Europe is on the train, and a great way to save money on train fares is to buy a rail pass. There are many different passes available from single country passes to complete passes that allow you to travel all over the continent. It entirely depends on your trip, but a rail pass can literally save you hundreds of dollars.

Tourist passes:
Many cities in Europe have special tourist passes that you can buy, and they usually give you free use of their public transport systems, and also offer free or discounted entry to attractions and museums in the city.

Walking and cycling:
One of the best ways to see a city is on foot. You will always see more and have a great experience, it gives you lots of exercise and costs you absolutely nothing. Many European cities are also very bicycle friendly, and renting a bike for the day can be a great way to explore a city.

Budget airlines:
There are two great budget airlines in Europe, EasyJet and RyanAir, and together they fly all over Europe to most major destinations, and at excellent prices. This is a great option if you are short on time and want to travel faster or over larger distances.

Lease a car: If you are going to be travelling in Europe for an extended amount of time and want to hire a car, it can often be cheaper to lease a car instead. Many companies such as Peugeot lease cars for a certain amount of months.

Travel in Europe doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might think, and if you use these tips, you are sure to save plenty of money on your trip through Europe.

Lazy, Sunny Menorca Holidays: The Perfect Cure for the Blues

Lazy, Sunny Menorca Holidays: The Perfect Cure for the Blues

Cabin fever isn’t just a winter phenomenon. People who work in the city often suffer from being cooped up for days on end. The long, stressful hours in closed quarters – usually in conjunction with poor diets, minimal opportunities to exercise, and lack of fresh air and sunshine – can often lead to burn-out or office fatigue. But a few days relaxing in fresh air and sunshine can do wonders to reverse the effects of such doldrums. There’s nothing like basking under the sun on a tropical island paradise with friends and loved ones to help you recuperate from stress-filled, dreary days in the city. Menorca holidays offer a taste of authentic Mediterranean island life that is the perfect cure for the blues.

Menorca is known as the most laid-back among the Balearic Islands. Although Menorca holidays can offer enough excitement for even the most hardcore of thrill-seekers-such as water sports, nightclubs, museums and festivals, and endless beach parties-the pristine beaches, calm blue waters, and quiet charm are especially inviting to those who simply want to relax and recharge. Although some of the larger beaches are extremely popular and attract thousands of tourists, many smaller and intimate areas-such as Cala en Brut, a paradise for sunbathers-offer both privacy and tranquillity for those who simply want to spend their Menorca holidays relaxing and enjoying the sun.

Here are some other low-impact and low-key ways you can enjoy your Menorca holidays:

Eat your blues away

A great meal can cure many ills – or so the saying goes! Menorcan cuisine features the freshest seafood caught by local fishermen, prepared simply and excellently by local chefs using only the best local produce-the perfect recipe for a ‘pick me up’ and energy boost. The famous lobster stew of Fornells, for example, is said to be a favourite of the King of Spain himself and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Be carried away

No need to work up a sweat as you tour the historic Mao Harbour. Just sit back and relax on a guided excursion on a glass-bottom boat that gives you a chance to enjoy the sights of the island, both above and below the water! You’ll see fascinating landmarks such Sant Felip Castle, Fort Malborough, La Mola Fortress, the Isla del Rey British Military Hospital, and Lazaretto Quarantine Island – as well as get a chance to see marine life native to the Mediterranean. For those who want to stay on land, check out a jeep safari – where guides use all-terrain vehicles to give you a chance to study the architecture and natural environment up close.

The ultimate sunset

The natural caves of Cala’n Porter are the perfect setting for viewing Menorca’s amazing sunsets. For an additional touch of romance, bars such as the Cova d’en Xoroi offer open terraces where you can sip cool drinks and enjoy ambient music while viewing the sunset. If you’re up to more excitement, check out the live performances and dancing offered later at night; otherwise, a relaxing stroll in the moonlight and the crisp cool sea air is the perfect way to end the day.

Best 1-Day Grand Canyon Float Tour Deals Are Online

Best 1-Day Grand Canyon Float Tour Deals Are Online

Although most people see the Grand Canyon by helicopter or airplane, one-day Grand Canyon rafting tours give you another option. Several tour companies offer this experience. Rafting is a wonderful way to see the Colorado River and the awe-inspiring canyon it created over the millennia.

Some companies offer longer raft tours down the Colorado, but the single-day experience is best for most people because it doesn’t take too much time away from their other vacation activities. So, unless you’re coming to the area specifically for river rafting, you’ll probably want to choose the one-day excursion. It will give you an amazing experience but still leave plenty of time for you to explore the rest of the area. If you want a longer rafting trip, it’s easy to look online for outfitters that offer multi-day rafting tours.

Once you compare their cost to the price of Grand Canyon helicopter or airplane tours, you’ll realize that rafting tours are quite reasonable. Tour operators in Las Vegas can organize your entire trip, including transportation to your raft’s launch site. Read the fine print before you book anything, though – you’re paying good money and you’ll want to make sure you understand everything your tour includes.

Single-day smooth-water float tours can be taken from the South Rim or the West Rim. The version from the West Rim begins with a helicopter ride to the canyon floor. You’ll then be transported to the base of Hoover Dam, where you’ll get aboard your raft. After floating through Black Canyon, your river tour will end at Willow Beach, Arizona. All in all, you’ll be on the water for about 11 miles.

Two types of smooth-water float tours originate at the South Rim. Both packages start at Tusayan, Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park Airport. The most affordable (and popular) of these smooth-water float tours takes you by motor coach to Page, Arizona. From there you’ll make your way to the base of Glen Canyon Dam. That’s where you’ll board your raft and begin your 15-mile float down the calm waters of the river. Your rafting tour will end when you arrive at Lee’s Ferry. The other South Rim package flies you to Page by airplane and includes a 4×4 ride to Antelope Canyon, but the river portion is the same. Your boat will be an adventure-grade pontoon raft that can seat as many as 19 people.

You’ll float down the river on calm water on all of these trips – there aren’t any white-water rapids along your route. That’s why they’re so perfect for any age group. Children must be at least four years old, however.

Summer is peak season for these tours. It’s not unusual for them to sell out, so don’t wait to the last minute before making your arrangements. I strongly recommend you book your rafting trip in advance. You can look online to find the float tour that suits your needs perfectly, and you’ll find the best prices there too. Some of the deals I’ve found online have been almost embarrassingly good.

With so many different tour operators offering these rafting experiences, it’s really easy to find Grand Canyon rafting tours online. The one-day float tour will give you plenty of time on the Colorado River without taking up too much of your vacation.
